Preparing for the Holidays: Your Teeth and Oral Health

Cranford Dental is all smiles for the holiday season!

The holidays are here, and Cranford Dental is excited for this wonderful time of year! And we want to help our patients celebrate in style.

You are likely preparing for the season: shopping, traveling, partying, or resting from the busy year. So much to do!

However, this isn’t a time to neglect your teeth! Thus, the dentists and staff at Cranford Dental in Rock Hill, South Carolina want to make sure your teeth are ready for Christmas.

Below I will discuss some tips for caring for your teeth as the holidays approach.

Schedule a dental checkup

Schedule a visit to your dentist for a thorough cleaning and checkup. A professional cleaning will remove plaque and tartar buildup, leaving your teeth feeling fresh and looking their best.

Your dentist can also catch any potential issues early on, preventing them from escalating into bigger problems during the busy holiday season.

Listen to Dr. Robinson’s 2 Minute Holiday Message

Here Dr. Robinson shares tips to get ready for the holidays. Share this with your children and other family members for a very Merry Christmas.

Address any pain or concerns

Have you recently had pain in your teeth? Or do you have a chipped tooth? If you have any concerns, it is best to address these before the holidays.

With recent advances in dentistry, many dental concerns are addressed in one visit. There may still be time for you to get back to good dental health before Christmas.

Consider that your dentist and emergency dentists in the area may have limited hours around Christmas Time. You don’t want a dental emergency to prevent you from having an enjoyable time with family and friends.

 Update your Christmas Wishlist

Though not as “fun” as new clothes or new electronics, many oral care products make perfect Christmas gifts! Perhaps you could ask your mother to gift you a new Sonicare toothbrush instead of another scarf.

Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss also make great stocking stuffers. My 3 children will all be getting brand new supplies from Santa this year.

Products we commonly recommend at Cranford Dental:

  • Phillips Sonicare toothbrush.
  • Waterpik
  • OralB Triumph toothbrush

Choose your Holiday treats wisely

The holiday season is notorious for sweet treats and sugary delights. While it’s okay to occasionally indulge, be mindful of your sugar intake. Consuming excessive sugar can lead to tooth decay and cavities.

Choose tooth-friendly snacks like crunchy vegetables, cheese, and nuts, which can help clean your teeth naturally. Also avoid excessively sticky or hard foods that can damage your enamel or dislodge your dental work.

Choose healthier dessert options. And if you do indulge in sweets, make sure to brush your teeth afterward. Or rinse your mouth with water to minimize the impact on your dental health.

Pack your essentials

Even while you’re traveling, don’t neglect your daily dental care routine. Pack a travel size bag of all the necessary supplies so it is ready to go!

Toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and fluoride rinse can all fit in a small bag. Don’t allow a few days of travel to interrupt the good habits you have worked hard to establish.

Start the New Year with New Habits

As you think about your New Year’s resolutions, why not add some new dental habits? Here are some ideas for dental resolutions you may want to incorporate:

  • Brush my teeth twice a day instead of once
  • Floss more often — every day is ideal!
  • Give up soft drinks, drink more water
  • Don’t miss my dental checkups in 2024

What to do if you have a Dental Emergency

Imagine it is Christmas Eve and you suddenly develop a toothache. Your dental office is likely closed for the day. What do you do?

Try to call your dental office– they should have a dentist or staff member on call to address your concern.

Cranford Dental always has someone on call for our patients of record. You may have to leave a voicemail, but your call will be returned within 3 hours.

Some dental problems such as pain and swelling can be temporarily tended to over the phone. Your dentist can recommend instructions and medications if needed.

Remember What the Season is About

Christmas and the Holiday Season are about remembering what is important to you. Spending time with family and friends, reminiscing about times past, and looking forward to the year ahead.

Remember to smile at those around you, even if you wish your smile was prettier. The most beautiful smiles are those that express the joy in your heart. Your smile may touch the life of someone who is having a difficult Christmas.
