At Cranford Dental, a common question we hear is: “How often should I go to the dentist?” The answer isn’t always one-size-fits-all. In fact, your age, oral health habits, and individual needs all play a role.
To help you (and your family) stay on track with dental health, we’ve broken down our recommended visit schedule by age group:
Infants & Toddlers (0–3 years)
Recommended Visits: First visit by age 1, then once or twice a year
Even before your child has a full set of teeth, early dental visits are crucial. They help identify potential issues, establish good habits, and ensure the baby teeth are developing properly.

We make first visits fun and low-stress so your child feels comfortable at the dentist from the start!
The visit for a 1 year old is typically looking into their mouth for any concerns and educating the parents on good habits for the home. Usually around age 2.5 is when kids begin filling comfortable with riding in the chair and having their teeth “tickled” with the toothbrush.
Children (4–12 years)
Recommended Visits: Every 6 months
Kids in this age group are more prone to cavities because they are frequent snackers. Regular checkups help catch cavities early–the earlier we identify a cavity, the simpler it is to treat.
At 6 month visits we love giving brushing and flossing tips. We are able to check at the next visit to make sure your kid is following the instructions we have given. Proper homecare is the most important thing kids can do to keep their teeth healthy!
We also use routine visits to monitor growth and development. If we identify growth issues at the proper time, treatment for them is much simpler than if we wait too long.
Teens (13–19 years)
Recommended Visits: Every 6 months, possibly more with braces
Teenagers face unique dental challenges like wisdom teeth, sports injuries, or orthodontic care. Frequent visits help keep teeth and gums healthy during this fast-changing time.
Sodas and sports drinks become popular during the teen years. These drinks make your teen susceptible to developing dental decay, and sometimes it can happen very quickly! At 6 month visits we check for decay. Also, we educate your teen on the long-term damage soda and poor hygiene can do to their teeth.

Adults (20–64 years)
Recommended Visits: Every 6 months, or more often for specific conditions
Routine cleanings and exams help prevent gum disease, catch decay early, and keep your smile bright. If you have gum issues, dry mouth, or other health conditions, your dentist may recommend more frequent visits.
“Can I just come once a year?” is something we are asked. Your dentist and dental hygienist will evaluate your dental history and your homecare habits to see if this would be an option for you.
Some patients do not build up tartar as often as others. Some patients exhibit impeccable dental hygiene. If you fall in one of those categories, the answer may be “Yes! We will see you once a year!”
We never recommend extending beyond a year, because screening for oral cancer and for dental decay is very important.
Seniors (65+ years)
Recommended Visits: Every 6 months or as recommended
As we age, risks increase for gum disease, dry mouth, and oral cancer so routine dental visits are very important. Whether you have your natural teeth or dentures, regular visits help maintain comfort, function, and overall wellness.
Aging can cause changes in manual dexterity, making oral hygiene more difficult. That, along with decreased salivary flow make your ability to properly clean your teeth challenging. Seeing your hygienist more frequently will help keep your mouth healthy. She may also have recommendations for devices and products that are helpful for aging patients.

So… How Often Should YOU Go?
