Instructions Following a Dental Crown

March 6, 2023 by Dr. Elizabeth Cranford Robinson 8 Comments

Dentist standing at chair giving crown home instructions to patient

How should your teeth and mouth feel following a dental crown at Cranford Dental? And how should you take care of your teeth?

Here’s exactly what you should do when you get home from your crown appointment.

Chew carefully at first.

Wait until the numbing from anesthesia wears off before you chew.

If you get hungry while still numb, something you can eat with a spoon or straw is best.

You may need to treat slight soreness.

  • You could possibly be sore around your gums and at the injection site for a few days.
  • If this bothers you, take ibuprofen 600 mg every 4 to 6 hours.
  • Take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 500 mg to 1000 mg if you are unable to take ibuprofen.
  • Use warm salt water rinses if your gums are sore.

Your mouth should feel “normal” quickly.

Within a few days (or even a few hours) your teeth should feel like they did pre-crown when you close and when you chew. In fact, you may not be able to tell which tooth the dentist put the crown on.

Often our patients love the smooth, clean feel of the dental crown after dealing with a broken down tooth.

Please call or text our office at 803-324-7670 or contact Cranford Dental online if you have questions or concerns about your new dental crown.

Thanks for your kind words and for visiting our office. Twenty years with CEREC technology and we are still fascinated too. Best of all it makes a strong crown with a precise fit. Hope you enjoy living in Rock Hill as much as we all enjoy it!
