A good denture is one that looks and functions like natural teeth. At Cranford Dental we pride ourselves in providing our patients with high quality dentures.
Our goal is to make sure your denture fits and functions well so that you can forget you even have a denture. We will use the time, materials, and expertise to make a denture that works well for you.
These are the most important attributes of a good custom denture:
Proper Fit
Properly fitting dentures will increase confidence and greatly improve daily activities. Our dentists want to remove any chance for an embarrassing moment caused by dentures that do not fit well.
Proper fit starts with your dentist taking a high quality impression of your mouth. We use high quality impression material that will pick up even slight textural differences in the mouth.
We also take the time to check the impression and make sure we have no voids or bubbles that would lead to inaccurate models. By taking extra time with our impressions we save time and effort in the future.
We will make sure that your denture causes no pressure points on your underlying tissue. Pressure points can be just as annoying as having a piece of food stuck in your mouth. Furthermore, they may cause tissue inflammation, which will lead to problems with denture fit. We will take away any pressure points upon delivery of your denture.
A good denture will fit well for many years. If changes in your gums and tissues cause your denture to feel loose, we will adjust and reline your denture. Your denture will fit just as well as a new denture would fit.
Smooth Function
We want your denture to function like real teeth.
The most important factor for good denture function is that your mouth is in balancing contact. This means that when you bite down all of your teeth hit at the same time. It also means that when your mouth is at rest your teeth are hitting in a way that feels natural.
Tell us about any inconsistencies you feel and we will adjust the teeth to ensure a balanced bite.
We also want to make sure that your denture is not impinging on any of your tissue when your mouth is moving. When you are eating or talking there are soft tissues in your mouth that are moving. If your denture gets in the way of these soft tissues it can cause some discomfort.
We will adjust your denture at delivery to make it as comfortable as possible.
Natural Look
A high quality denture will look good. We want your denture to look like natural teeth. The key to making your denture look good is taking extra time to evaluate your mouth and selecting materials that make the teeth and gingival tissue look natural.
Picking the right size, shape, and shade of teeth differs from patient to patient. We will work with you to get the look that is perfect for you.
Tooth Size
The size will be based on the length of your arch if you need a complete denture and on the space in between your remaining teeth if you need a partial denture.
Tooth Shape
The shape of your denture teeth is partially up to preference, but there are also genetic factors that go into picking your teeth. Did you know that there are differences in teeth shape between the sexes and amongst different ethnicities?
Tooth Shade
The shade of your denture relies on existing teeth and skin tone. If you are getting a partial denture we will pick a tooth shade that matches your teeth. We also want to match your teeth to your skin tone.
Though we want to give you a white smile, there is such a thing as “too white.” If your teeth are whiter than they should be they will stand out and will not look like natural teeth.
Gingiva
A denture is not just teeth. Your denture will also simulate some of your gingival tissue in acrylic. We will match your denture acrylic to your existing tissue.
We also want to put some of the natural lines that the roots teeth cause in natural dentition. Plus there are texture peculiarities that we will put in your denture that will make your denture look natural.
Some of the “look” of your denture will be up to your preference and we will make sure we get what you want. However, some options will be based on your existing teeth, gums, and general look. We use our 30+ years of experience to help guide you to the best denture possible.
What No Denture Will Do
Feel Like Your Real Teeth
There are several sensations that come through your teeth that you may not even think about. Your teeth can sense the temperature of the food you are eating. They let you know how hard you are biting. They give you a sense of the texture of food. Eating with even a good denture will not replace these sensations.
Give You a Free Pass from Dental Appointments
Getting a great denture does not mean you get to miss all of your dental appointments. You will need to come in so we can make sure the tissues in your mouth remain healthy. We also want to make sure your denture is clean and working well.
You may not need to come in as often as you did when you had teeth, but you do still need to come in for regular checkups.
